This two-part commission was a great opportunity to exercise the skill of adapting conceptual armor into real-world pieces. The request was to bring the armor from the Sideshow “Mythos” Boba Fett collectable figure to life.

The helmet was completed as a standalone piece in 2024. A lineage Return of the Jedi Boba Fett casting was sourced by the client and used as the base for this project. To develop the paint job, I studied both the Sideshow Mythos figure and the screen-used Boba Fett helmets from the original trilogy films. The paint detailing on the figure is low resolution and lacks the depth to appear as a real piece of armor. I followed the general damage patterns on the figure, but adapted appearance to better match the design language of the Original Trilogy Boba Fett helmets.

 

The helmet was base coated with automotive silver paint. Custom-mixed acrylic paints were applied over liquid latex masking in several alternating layers to build up a well-worn and damaged appearance. This was distressed using a mix of classic ILM shading and heavier washes/splatter passes to give the helmet more of a used “nomad” appearance. 

 

The client returned in 2026 to commission a set of armor to match the helmet. I used the 3D models that I previously developed for my Mandalorian Season 2 Boba Fett replica costume, except for the cod piece and the kidney plate, which were models provided by the client.

The armor was printed in ASA filament and backed with fiberglass for strength. Many of the greeblies were printed in SLA resin. The paint application for the armor was identical to the helmet described above, with one exception; I followed the Return of the Jedi paint job for the base paint (as requested by the client) instead of the armor from the Sideshow figure. I still took some liberties with the paintjob to make sure there was continuity between the helmet I made in 2024 and this set of armor.

All of the work described above was completed in-house, with the exception of the following: the aluminum gauntlet darts and collar studs (MachineCraft Replicas), and the range finder LEDs (Jupiter Electronics).
